LIEGE

  • We enjoyed some shopping in Liege and found a fun, modern furniture store where we bought some cute throw pillow cases as souvenirs. Like everyone else, we like having some furniture or pictures in our house--anything that can be a visual reminder of the fun travels.
  • We didn’t know exactly what to see in Liege, but once we got there, we learned the a popular tourist spot is a flight of stairs with 374 steps called the Montagne de Bueren. The stairs seemed so long and steep, but houses lined both sides of the stairs all the way to the top. I really couldn’t imagine walking those steps every day. There may have been some way to drive into a driveway on the other side of the steps, but I don’t really think so. At the very top of the hill it’s a fun lookout spot. There was also an old World War I memorial at the top of the hill, the Citadel of Liege. Liege was the location of the first battle of World War I, the opening engagement of the German invasion of Belgium, though I don’t think we saw anything memorials from World War I, specifically. Liege is very close to the German border, on the east side of Belgium.
  • The steps were interesting, but I don’t think we saw anything amazing that would make me interested in returning to Liege.
  • Liege was just a day trip from Brussels and had fun shops, gelato, and pastries. It was a great downtown and we let ourselves shop around a little. We went to the cutest home store called Maisons du Monde and had so much fun looking around! That was also a highlight. We were dreaming up what we wanted our next apartment to look like when we moved to California, and we bought the cutest pillowcase covers for our bed to bring back. I’m so glad we did! I love them extra because of the memories and because they’re from Europe!
  • Liege also had a giant staircase in town called Montagne de Bueren. I may have complained about walking up it…but it wasn’t too bad. There were houses all the way up, you were just walking past peoples’ front doors the entire way. It led to a beautiful view to the city, and we ate our packed meal of pb&js as we sat at the top of the staircase. Afterwards, we walked a little way to a monument where they defended Belgium in the first world war. It was neat to see, as there was an obelisk atop the hill with some engravings and it was another beautiful lookout point. Lower down, before you climb up to that obelisk, you can see parts of the wall of the fort they must have used back then to defend themselves.
