BRUGES
  • Bruges is adorable. After leaving the train station, we had like a one-mile walk into the heart of the city. We were just walking down these cobblestone streets that seem totally deserted, except for a line of tourists like us. I’m sure other people drive into the city or bus in closer, but we really enjoyed the walk because it was so quiet and peaceful.
  • In the heart of Bruges there is a big open plaza (the heart of most European cities, it seems) where they were having a huge farmer’s market. The smell around behind some of the carts was nasty, and it wasn’t very clean while the market was open. There is a picturesque line of colored houses on one side of the plaza, but with all the tents and trucks set up, that spot didn’t seem quite so charming.
  • We had a lot of fun window shopping in Bruges. There are some very high-end shops and window streets that we walked all around. We found a delicious pasta place and also had amazing ice cream--real ice cream, not gelato.
  • Bruges was an absolute dream! We took a day trip to Bruges as we left Brussels and were headed back to Amsterdam for our flight home (just made it to our hotel by the airport the night before our flight). Bruges was the idyllic Europeon town of cute buildings, plazas, cobblestone streets, and a river running through the town. It was gorgeous and known for its chocolate, so we grabbed chocolates for birthday gifts for the girls in Tay’s family and belgian waffles dipped in chocolate for the boys bdays. Tay tried some chocolate, and I enjoyed the beeest vegan ice cream. It was bloodred apple and oh, so good. It was just off the main plaza of the town, which had a bunch of food trucks in it for the day and a market. We also went to a bookstore that was in the plaza square and found a fun souvenir, a board book that is so cute! It’s in Deutsch, and is a fish on each page with a word explaining the emotion he’s feeling. We were translating it in the store and loved that it had more than just “happy,” “sad,” or “angry,”--one of the translations was “pissed off” and we thought it was hilarious.
  • We at lunch at such a fun pasta place. They basically were a Subway, but for pasta. You chose your noodles, sauce, meat, cheese, etc. They had dairy free options, of course, and it was a great serving size of pasta. Plus, we were probably extra hungry, so it probably tasted extra good to us.
